About K&S Electronics and Security

Where are you located and what areas do you serve?

We are based in Headingley, Manitoba, just west of Winnipeg, at 1229 Hall Road. From there, we serve homeowners and businesses throughout Winnipeg and the surrounding communities, including Headingley, Selkirk, Brandon, and other areas nearby. If you are not sure whether your location falls within our service area, reach out to our team at (204) 221-3820.

How long have you been in business?

More than 20 years now. We’ve seen the technology change a lot over that time, and all of that hands-on experience goes into every job we take on, from a single room right up to a whole home.

Can I visit your showroom to see the products before making a decision?

Yes, and we encourage it. We have a certified Control4 showroom where you can see and experience the technology firsthand before deciding what is right for you. Seeing a system in action often makes it much easier to picture how it could work in your own space. We recommend booking ahead so we can give you our full attention.

Do you work with homeowners only, or do you also work with builders and businesses?

We work with all three. A large part of what we do is custom residential work for homeowners and families, but we also partner with builders and renovators on new projects, and we design integrated audio, video, and security systems for commercial clients.

What is CEDIA, and why does it matter that K&S is CEDIA certified?

CEDIA is the global trade association for home technology professionals. Our CEDIA certification means our team is trained to industry-recognized standards, so your system is designed and installed properly and reliably.

Is K&S recognized within the Manitoba home building community?

Yes. We are a member of the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association, which reflects our active role in the local building community and our trusted relationships with builders across the province.

Getting Started

How do I know if home automation or a smart home system is right for me?

If you have ever wished you could control your lights, music, climate, or security from one place instead of juggling multiple apps and remotes, automation is likely a good fit. It is also worth considering if you want added convenience, energy savings, or peace of mind while you are away.

The best way to know for certain is to have a conversation with us about how you live in your home and what would make daily life easier.

What is the first step to working with K&S?

It starts with a simple conversation. Reach out through our website or call us at (204) 221-3820 to set up a consultation. We’ll talk through your goals, your space, and your budget, then suggest an approach that fits. No pressure, and no obligation to go any further.

Is the consultation free?

Yes, the initial consultation is complimentary. It gives us a chance to understand your goals and gives you a chance to learn more about us before any commitment is made.

Can I start with one or two things and add more later?

For sure. Plenty of our clients start with just one system, maybe security, audio, or lighting, and build from there over time. A well-planned system is meant to grow with you, so there’s no need to tackle everything at once.

Do you work on homes that are already built, or only on new construction?

Both. We regularly add automation, audio, theatre, and security systems to existing homes, and we also work on new builds from the ground up. If your home is already finished, we will plan the installation carefully to work within your existing space. If you are building, getting us involved early often gives you the most flexibility.

The Installation Process

How long does a typical installation take?

It depends on the size and complexity of the project. A single system might be completed in a day or two, while a whole-home automation, theatre, and security package can take longer. During your consultation, we will give you a realistic timeline so you know what to expect before we begin.

Will your team make a mess? What should I expect during the install?

We treat your home with respect. Our installers work cleanly, tidy up at the end of each day, and aim to keep disruption to a minimum. Before we start, we will walk you through what the process involves and where we will be working, so there are no surprises.

Do I need to be home the whole time during installation?

Not necessarily. We will need access to the relevant areas of your home, and there are usually a few points where your input is helpful, but you do not have to be present for every moment.

Can you work around a renovation that is already in progress?

Yes. We often coordinate with homeowners, contractors, and trades during active renovations. Getting us involved while work is underway can actually be ideal, since it allows wiring and equipment to be planned before walls are closed up.

After Installation and Support

What happens if something stops working after you install it?

If something is not working as it should, reach out to us, and we will help get it sorted. Supporting our clients after the install is a core part of how we work.

Do you offer any kind of ongoing support or maintenance?

Yes. We believe in long-term relationships, not one-time installs. We are here to help with questions, adjustments, and support well after your system is up and running.

If I want to add something new down the road, can I call you to come back?

Of course. Many of our clients return to us as their needs change, whether that means finishing a basement, adding a home theatre, or expanding their security. Because we are already familiar with your setup, adding to it is usually a smooth process. We are always glad to come back.

Pricing

How much does a home automation system cost?

Every system is custom, so the cost depends on the size of your home, the features you want, and how everything connects together.

How much does a home theatre setup typically cost?

Home theatre pricing varies widely based on room size, equipment, seating, acoustics, and the level of finish you want. A dedicated theatre with premium components is a different investment than a media room built around a large display. Once we understand your space and goals, we will give you an honest estimate with no surprises.

How much does security monitoring cost per month?

Monitoring costs depend on the type of system and the level of service you choose. We do provide a basic alarm monitoring plan at $24.99/month, a premium monitoring plan at $29.99/month, and a cellular monitoring plan at $39.99/month. To learn more, visit this page.

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

Yes. We offer financing through iFinance, which makes it easier to spread the cost of your project into manageable payments rather than paying everything up front.

Home Automation

What exactly is home automation, and what can it control in my home?

Home automation brings the different systems in your home together so you can control them easily, often from a single app or remote. That can include lighting, climate, motorized shades, music, televisions, security, cameras, and more. Instead of managing each one separately, you get simple, unified control, which means fewer remotes and less daily hassle.

What is Control4, and why do you recommend it?

Control4 is a leading smart home platform that connects many different devices and brands into one easy-to-use system. We recommend it because it is reliable, flexible, and works with a wide range of products, which means we can build a system around what you actually want rather than forcing you into one brand.

How is a professionally installed system different from something I buy at Best Buy, Costco, or set up myself?

Off-the-shelf products are a fine starting point, but they often work in isolation and can be frustrating to connect together. A professionally installed system is designed as one cohesive whole, set up to be dependable and easy to use, and supported by a local team who can help if you ever need it.

Can everything be controlled from my phone?

Yes. A well-designed system lets you control your lights, audio, climate, shades, cameras, and more from your phone, whether you are at home or away. You can also use in-wall touchscreens, remotes, or voice control, depending on what feels most natural for you and your family.

What happens to my system if the internet goes down?

The core functions of your system, such as lighting, audio, and security, are generally designed to keep working locally even without the internet. What typically requires a connection is remote access, meaning the ability to check in or control things from your phone while you are away.

My home already has some smart devices. Can you integrate what I already have?

In many cases, yes. Part of our consultation is reviewing the devices you already own to see what can be folded into a unified system. Where something is compatible, we will integrate it; where it is not, we will explain your options honestly so you can decide what makes sense.

Is home automation complicated to use day to day?

It should make your life simpler, not more complicated. A good system is designed to be intuitive, so everyday tasks like dimming the lights, playing music, or arming the security system take a single tap.

Business and Commercial Automation Services

What commercial services does K&S offer?

We provide a range of solutions for businesses, including professional audio and video systems, automation, security and surveillance, access control, voice entry and intercom systems, motorized shades, and meeting room technology.

Can you set up AV and presentation technology for a boardroom or meeting space?

Yes. We design and install audio and video systems for boardrooms and conference spaces, including displays, sound, and easy-to-use presentation controls. The goal is technology that simply works when you need it, so meetings start on time without anyone fighting with the equipment.

Do you offer access control and intercom systems for commercial buildings?

We do. We install card access, voice entry, and intercom systems that help you manage who comes and goes and keep your premises secure. These can be set up to suit the size and flow of your building, from a single entrance to multiple access points.

Can you install a security and surveillance system for my business?

Yes. We design and install commercial security and surveillance systems, including cameras you can view remotely, so you can keep an eye on your property whether you are on site or away. We will tailor the coverage to the areas that matter most for your business.

Do you work with contractors and developers on commercial builds?

We do. We regularly partner with contractors and developers, and involving us early in a build allows us to plan wiring and infrastructure properly before construction is complete.

Do you offer ongoing support and monitoring for commercial clients?

Yes. We support our clients well beyond installation, with ongoing help and monitoring options to keep systems running smoothly.
